Understanding Reiki: A Grounded Approach to Energy Healing

In a world that constantly asks us to keep pushing, many people are quietly searching for something that helps them feel calm, connected, and supported again.
For some, that path leads to Reiki.
Not because they’re looking for a miracle or a quick fix, but because they’re exhausted. Overwhelmed.
Disconnected from themselves.
And wanting a gentler way to reconnect with their body and nervous system.
Reiki became part of my life during a time when I needed exactly that.
What began as curiosity slowly became a grounding practice that helped me better understand rest, regulation, and the importance of creating space for the body to soften instead of constantly surviving.
This blog is not about convincing anyone of anything.
It’s simply an honest, grounded look at what Reiki is, how it’s traditionally practiced, and why so many people find comfort in it as part of a broader approach to wellbeing.
🌸 What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle Japanese energy healing practice traditionally used to support relaxation, balance, and overall wellbeing.
The word Reiki combines:
Rei — often translated as “universal”
Ki — meaning “life force energy”
Reiki was rediscovered and developed into a formal practice by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan during the early 20th century.
At its core, Reiki is based on the idea that stress, overwhelm, and emotional strain can affect the body deeply, and that creating space for rest and energetic balance may help support the body’s natural ability to regulate and restore itself.
A Reiki session typically involves a practitioner placing their hands lightly on or above the body in a calm and supportive environment.
The practice is non-invasive, gentle, and designed to encourage relaxation.
🤍 My First Experience With Reiki
When I first experienced Reiki for myself, I didn’t approach it from a place of needing proof.
I approached it from a place of exhaustion.
At the time, I had already spent years living in high-pressure environments, constantly operating in survival mode and pushing through stress without slowing down long enough to notice what my body was trying to tell me.
During my first session, I remember lying down fully clothed in a quiet room while soft music played in the background.
There was nothing dramatic about it.
What stood out most was how deeply my body relaxed.
I noticed warmth, heaviness, and a sense of stillness that I hadn’t felt in a long time.
My mind felt quieter.
My body felt softer.
And afterward, I carried a sense of calm with me that lasted well beyond the session itself.
That experience led me to explore Reiki more deeply, eventually completing my Reiki training and becoming a Reiki Master myself.
🌿 Reiki and the Nervous System
One of the reasons many people are drawn to Reiki is because of how calming it can feel for the body and nervous system.
Modern life keeps many of us in a constant state of alertness:
rushing
overthinking
emotionally overloaded
disconnected from rest
When the nervous system spends long periods in stress mode, the body often struggles to fully relax and recover.
Reiki is not a medical treatment, but many people experience it as supportive because it creates an opportunity for the body to slow down, settle, and move into a more regulated state.
People commonly report:
feeling calmer
sleeping more deeply
experiencing emotional release
feeling lighter or more grounded afterward
For some, Reiki simply becomes a moment where they finally allow themselves to stop.
And sometimes, that pause matters more than people realise.
🌸 My Approach to Reiki
My Reiki sessions are grounded in the traditional Usui system of Reiki while also drawing from my broader background in holistic wellness, movement, nervous system support, and somatic awareness.
Every session is guided by the individual.
Some people arrive emotionally overwhelmed.
Others feel burnt out, anxious, disconnected, physically tense, or simply exhausted from carrying too much for too long.
Rather than forcing an experience, I focus on creating an environment where the body feels safe enough to soften.
Depending on the session, I may gently incorporate:
guided meditation
breath awareness
sound therapy
chakra balancing
grounding practices
crystals within the space
These elements are used intentionally and carefully to support relaxation, emotional steadiness, and nervous system regulation.
The goal is never intensity.
The goal is support.
🌿 What a Reiki Session Can Feel Like
Every person experiences Reiki differently.
Some people feel warmth or tingling.
Some notice emotional release.
Some feel deeply relaxed or sleepy.
Others simply enjoy an hour of stillness and quiet.
There is no “right” way to experience it.
A typical Reiki session usually involves:
lying down fully clothed
calming music or quiet stillness
gentle hand placements on or above the body
a peaceful, supportive environment
Sessions are designed to feel safe, non-invasive, and calming.
You do not need to believe in anything specific for Reiki to be experienced as restful or supportive.
🤎 Reiki Within Holistic Wellbeing
Reiki works best when viewed as part of a broader approach to wellbeing rather than as a standalone solution.
In my work, I often speak about the importance of supporting the whole person:
body
mind
nervous system
emotions
lifestyle
energy
Because true wellbeing rarely comes from one thing alone.
Reiki can complement practices such as:
movement
mindfulness
breathwork
counselling or therapy
medical care
nervous system support
healthy lifestyle habits
Rather than replacing these things, Reiki simply creates additional space for rest, awareness, and reconnection.
🌿 Reiki in Modern Integrative Care
While Reiki is still considered a complementary wellness practice, it is increasingly being explored within integrative care settings around the world.
Some hospitals, wellness clinics, and palliative care environments now include Reiki as part of supportive care programs designed to help reduce stress and encourage relaxation during difficult experiences.
People often seek Reiki during periods of:
burnout
emotional stress
illness recovery
major life transitions
grief
pregnancy
chronic overwhelm
Not because Reiki replaces medical care, but because many people find comfort in having spaces where their nervous system is supported alongside conventional treatment.
🌸 Reiki During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can bring enormous physical, emotional, and energetic changes.
Many people seek gentle practices that help them feel calm, grounded, and connected during this season of life.
Reiki is often chosen during pregnancy because it is non-invasive and deeply gentle.
Sessions are adapted to prioritise comfort, relaxation, and emotional support, with no physical manipulation or pressure applied.
The focus is not on “fixing” anything.
It’s simply about creating space for rest, calm, and connection during a significant life transition.
As with all holistic practices, Reiki during pregnancy is offered as a complementary support alongside ongoing medical or midwifery care.
🌿 The Honest Truth About Reiki
Reiki is not magic.
It is not a replacement for medical or psychological care.
And it is not an instant solution to life’s challenges.
What Reiki can offer is something much quieter:
a moment to slow down
a space to breathe
support for rest and nervous system regulation
an opportunity to reconnect with yourself
In a world that constantly encourages people to keep going, there is something deeply powerful about creating moments where the body no longer feels like it has to fight so hard to keep up.
Sometimes healing begins there.
Not in force.
Not in fixing.
But in finally feeling safe enough to pause.
🤍
Whether you feel curious about Reiki, deeply connected to it, or simply open to exploring supportive wellness practices, I believe the most important thing is finding approaches that help you feel more grounded, supported, and connected to yourself.
Reiki has become one of those practices for me.
Not because it promises perfection, but because it reminds me that healing doesn’t always have to come through force.
Sometimes it begins with softness.
With awareness.
With rest.
And with allowing yourself the space to reconnect with who you are beneath the noise.
